If you are like millions of other people, you currently have more than one insurance policy. For instance, you may have a policy that protects the home, one for an automobile, health insurance coverage, and perhaps even life insurance. Typically, people will purchase a policy and trust the insurance agent or company 100%. This is not to say the insurer is dishonest but sometimes, things are happening behind the scenes that the policyholder is unaware of, costing more money than due.

Another reason it is important to keep a close watch on insurance policies is that if for some reason a policy were to be canceled but you had no idea, you could be driving an uninsured car or living in a home without protection. By law, insurance companies are required to send out notice that a policy is about to cancel so the policyholder can take the appropriate steps to stop it, if that is what they want to do. However, if for some reason a notice did not go out or if one did but for some reason it was not received, you could be at risk for not having coverage while thinking you did. Therefore, keeping a close watch on your insurance policies would provide confirmation of the policies being secure.

Additionally, you should watch your insurance policies to make sure you have the type and amount of coverage needed. After all, things change in life and you may be in a position of needing to increase the amount of insurance coverage you have. For instance, if you had remodeled your home, then coverage would need to be adjusted. Once you go through the steps to increase coverage, you should then follow up to make sure this was done. Unfortunately, even insurance professionals make mistakes so you have the right to verify that the increase in coverage was in fact processed.

Even for the sake of money insurance policies should be watched. It is common for a policyholder to be paying more than needed. Sometimes, a change was made on a policy and while this was completed, the adjustment in premium might not have gone through. With this, you would be paying out more money each month than necessary. Another example would be as a homeowner. If the type of loan you have requires PMI to be included on your homeowner’s insurance policy but you have now been in the home for 10 years, the PMI should be canceled.

However, this request needs to be made by you, which would then through the mortgage company. Once the request has been made, you would then need to watch your policy to make sure the PMI was removed, which would be a cost-saving step. As you can see, keeping a close watch on your insurance is for your own protection so you have the right type and amount of coverage, to ensure a policy was not canceled, and to make sure you are not spending more in premiums than required.
